Moodle hack

Magically link to course activities

Moodle platforms can magically (automatically) turn an activity name into a link when you type it exactly — no hyperlinking, and no broken links later when you copy the course.

This works through the Activity names auto-linking filter, which you activate at the site level, and can then toggle on or off at the course or activity level.

The inclusive edit

Nobody likes a "Click here" — for good reason

Some learners navigate a page using only its list of links, which means vague text like “Click here” doesn’t help anyone. Descriptive links give clearer context, especially for screen reader users.

Try: “View the rubric,” “Open the reading,” or “Access this week’s activity.” It’s easier to skim and more accessible for those of us using screen readers.

Moodle hack

Hide without hiding - Use Stealth mode to clean up those course pages

Stealth mode hides an activity from the course page while still keeping it available to learners — great for organising course materials without adding clutter.

How to use it (make sure this is enabled at the site level):

1. Open the settings for any activity or resource.
2. Under Common module settings, set Availability to “Make available but don’t show on course page.”
3. Save and link to it from anywhere in your course.

Result: A cleaner, calmer course page, with everything still available to learners.

Additionally, if you are planning to run end-of-month (EoM) reporting during standard business hours, we ask that you advise us ahead of time. Where possible, we strongly recommend scheduling reports outside of peak user traffic or teaching hours to reduce the impact on system performance. 

It is also worth noting that when users are opening multiple tabs (particularly in scenarios such as reviewing submissions), each attempt should ideally be opened and reviewed one at a time. If multiple attempts need to be open simultaneously, we recommend limiting this to no more than five tabs at once to help minimise system strain and maintain a smooth user experience.
